HG 1/144 Gundam Gundam Seed - METEOR

Next up, the boosters. The rear assembly had some nice designs which offered some opportunities for some cool lighting effects. The areas were cut away by first drilling holes along the edge we wish to cut. This creates a ‘perforated’ line which makes it easier to cut away, and sand down. inside.

Test fit with lighting

I saw another nice opportunity to create more cool lighting effects with the design of the boosters. With the help of the micro saws again, I did this…

The slots were then cleaned up by ‘threading’ thin strips of sand paper through, and sanding down evenly from the inside. The outer surface was cleaned up, and a ‘notch’ was scribed into the design.

With the slots cleaned up, here’s a test on how the lighting may look like eventually.

To help with the reflection of light, and to avoid light from ‘bleeding through the plastics’, I painted the inner surface with a layer of black, followed by Mr Metal Chrome.

Once this was done, the 2 halves were glued together, and the seamlines sanded down. Next, the top portion of the booster was cleaned up. The original molding / design was a bit soft and undefined. I did a lot of scribing and sanding to refine the details a bit.

Shown here is the comparison with the original part.

The 1/144 meteor comes with some pre-molded surface design which looks really out of place. Shown here is the close up of the surface detail I’m talking about. I scratched off the details with my scalpel, smoothened the surface back with sand paper, and scribed my own panel lines.

Here’s a comparison of the original part versus the cleaned up part.

Some more custom panel lines were added to the tail binder.

The under surface of the tail binder comes with some pretty nice designs as well. I added some additional panel lines to make it more interesting.

Panel lines were also scribed onto the smaller side binders as well.
& here’s how the tail binders look like on the main body
